Exile

A barren, sandy landscape with a few rocks and plants. There is a signpost in the distance stating ‘Eden 50
Miles’ pointing off stage. Adam and eve sit on a couple of rocks at the side of the stage.


EV: I’ve been thinking about things, now… he says that it was our fault for disobeying his wishes… yet, if I remember rightly, we only had free will after eating that flipping apple

AD: Yeah. so?

EV: well… if that’s the case, how could we have done anything wrong before or during eating the apple?

AD: uuh.. dunno

EV: So we ate the apple without free will and cannot be held accountable for the consequences after… It’s a catch 22

(pause…thinking)

AD: like what came first the chicken or the egg?

EV: well, that’s a load of bollocks too. Cos the chicken, like us, was put into the garden fully formed and only after our exit from Eden did mortality and birth begin.(under breath) All due to that damn apple

AD: (shaking head, sounding sarcastic) ooh.. that apple

EV: (with aggression mounting) But he put the blooming thing there in the first place

Ad: So what your saying is… he tricked us and knew we would eat the apple, because we didn’t have free will at the time

EV: … and now is blaming us for doing exactly what we were pre-determined to do

AD: (shaking head) wanker

EV: not only that… he threw us out of the garden, made us hungry and cold. An every-time I give birth or hit my foot or anything… (sounding emotional) it really hurts… (scrunches up face)

AD: (getting angrier and shaking head) Cock!

EV: So what’s he up to then…?

AD: err.. probably a bit pissed off about something

EV: yeah, well I tell you I’m pissed off. I’ve had enough of his hissy fits.. I swear (sound of distant thunder) he’s mental

EV: (stands up) come on… I’ve had enough of all this.
He’s got some answering to do (grabs Adam’s hand). Come on… I’m not flipping cooking and squeezing kids out
for the next five hundred years without some proper explanation about what the hell is going on and (lets go of Adam’s hand and opens arms wide to encompass her surroundings) what the blazin’ heck is all this about?

AD: he’s not gonna like it

EV: well what’s he gonna do?

(sound of thunder and crack of lightning, they both stare outwards – towards audience, looking scared. From behind his rock Adam reaches down and picks up an umbrella and stands up next to eve. They both look upwards as lightning strikes. He opens the umbrella above them. They look back to the audience and slowly hold each others’ hands)

(the scene gets darker and thunder claps loudly)

small oval objects start falling, being thrown, from the sky and splat around them and on top of the umbrella.

EV: that’s not rain (scrunches up nose, looking around)

AD: No, they’re…(bends down and examines residue) Eggs?

EV: The bloody coward! come on, I know your there, you’re everywhere, come out!

AD: (looking relieved now) I told you he had a sense of humour… everything’s going to be all right now, you’ll see

Ev: C’mon you chicken, get out here and tell us the truth.

(from stage right a man dressed in a chicken outfit comes out – Adam and eve both look relieved)

(The chicken man then pulls out of his plumage a machine gun and points it at Adam in a threatening and phallic way. Adam stares at him silently then bursts out)

AD: oh… you cock!

(Adam is shot down with a burst of machine gun fire – eve goes over to the body and kneels beside it and cradles Adams head – looks up at the chicken man and states

EV: Why?

(The chicken shrugs his shoulders and wonders off stage.

Eve stares at the audience and quietly states)

EV: oh… my… God






ALL About Eve

Eve – sat, clothed on a rock, smoking a cigarette – talking to audience – cockney accent in a Kathy burke style

So I’m like Hang on…

I get to loose my figure, I can’t drink or smoke and he gets what?

To prance around naked all day, enjoying Most of the fruit… hang out with his mates .. (under her breath)If they are ever created… and basically do what ever he likes..

And he’s like. (Pause – then in slightly gruffer accent)

But I’m stuck with this fucking bozo, (points behind her) who as soon as he’s done; its’ like… cheers babe and the lights are out.

So I’ve been royally fucked over, (exclaims) again…

then this freaky looking, slimey phallus thing comes up to me and says..

(in Hispanic accent) ‘hey sisss-ter – you wanna some real action’ and I’m thinking – y-e-a-h - but then he goes and gives me this green round thing.

An I’m like eerm …thanks – what am I supposed to do with that?

Well the next thing Adam comes bounding along, going (sounding slightly retarded) ‘What ya got?, What ya Got’ and grabs it. So now I want it back, but he keeps going on (adams’ voice) ‘Adams apple, Adams’ apple’ . dancing around me, pissing me right off. So I’m getting well bothered and jump right on top of him. So he only goes and fucking bites into the thing.

(pause)

And from then on he’s been much easier to deal with

When he realised he was naked – ha! he looked a fucking picture.

And now that (raises fingers in inverted commas) “big brothers” out of the picture an we’ve this free will thing..

I can go shopping whenever I like, there’s twenty-four hour TV, we’ve the pill… condoms…

(Picks up and bites into an apple and with mushed apple in mouth states)

The Flamin’ Zinger

This is set in a KFC in Bristol with a massage parlour next door. A zen master has just collapsed and an ambulance and police are at the scene:

Under his breath to no one– ‘Shit, shit, shit, oh fuck – bollocks’

Tarty Woman – ‘What’s happened to him?’ (Points at Zen dojo on stretcher being taken away.

Boy – he’s dead

TW- s-h-i-t. So you still serving or what?

B – err, I dunno, errm, what you want? (tips back his KFC baseball cap)

W – I’ll ‘ave a special chicky mealy dealy, with extra, S-p-I-c-e-y (sexily), sauce.

B – (raised intonation) ‘are you sure’

W – Yeah

B – Its just that he (pointing at stretcher) had the spicy sauce and (opening hands) well… I wouldn’t – (screwing up face)

W – isn’t he that weird guy from upstairs

B – Yeah. H-e-y, (Looks slyly) your from next doors aint ya?

W - Yeah I come in here all the time. You gona give me a discount or somethink.

B, (Scratches chin slowly) I could, like, y’know , (embarrassed and tongue tied) give you… extra fries?

W – oh yeah? you goner give me a large portion, ehh? (with wink)

The guy looks round at his colleague to see if he’s listening – there’s still a huge buzz with the police and ambulance crew / and onlookers.

B – Yeah I could do you a special deal

W – Well luvey, you see me right and I’ll sort you out (raising eyebrows)

He gets the box of chicken / chips and puts it in front of her – she passes a five pound note to him – on the counter – but he pushes it back.

B – listen, you girls, y’know, do ya do everything?

W- we cater for all requests, yeah, you should pop over – I’ll make sure you get a special deal-y

B- Uh – maybe – yeah

W – look, just come over on your next break and see if you like anything we have to offer

B- Ok, I’ll just have to wait for the manager to turn up, cos of all this… (points at commotion inside / outside).

W- Ok, ma luver, I’ll be seeing you

I just read this (link above) ,  not particularly as it happened!  But I thought you might be interested in one of the features ..  I mainly read it cos the guy who runs Morbid Press also does a poetry / spoken word ting called the Surrealist temple band who I think are Gud.

The whole situation with Mags in Oz is not clear cut / decided / discussed;  I actually just spoke with her earlier this morning.. 

But we are in different places and that is a fact..  

I decided, after painting the small office room ere and making it look rather nice that I didn’t really need any one in my space now that I’ve accepted a new job starting after Easter and had to leave Helga from Iceland to find somewhere else to live / before she arrived;  The job is Not the Gynaecology one which was all sort of confused in their understanding of the role & what the job actually was - inc. their tasks..  At some point,  as I was told whilst working in HE, We become / are the experts and it does sometimes come down to…. They don’t know what the Fuk they are talking about. (Some kind of metaphor ere)..

Worth keeping in mind when getting knocked back from funding apps etc.. Those gate keepers who follow trends / policies etc..  You might think know what they are doing / but as the Russian artist in the above pdf says..   Nah!!!!!  

However in yr note you say unsuccessful and then go on about all the things coming yr way.  If living remotely in Scotland is what you have set out to do - then yr a total success..

Whomever these successful people are that you mention might be feeling that they have bought into a lie and envy others who follow different paths. - who ever knew that studying philosophy and art wouldn’t set you up on a conventional career path ;)

So,  Ive got 14 days b4 the new job.  OPs Manager for a boutique film & Tv studio in Greenwich inc. small Manchester office.  Its kind of a new start and Opportunity..  we’ll see .  Just as I came back from meeting the co-MD, who knows Dave McKean very well. (Bonus!),  I had 2 agents pushing me to look at their offerings.  Ive dismissed one as too boring and the other is Net (Fuckin) Flix and managing a Huge studios in Enfield..  So they have better get their skates on before I sign me new contract..

There is a fox cub outside my window at the back sunbathing where the cherry tree used to be….

So,,  I need to follow suit and chill away from this machine. 

I went to the new Gilbert and George owned gallery yesterday off brick lane,  it's a nice space but too many hipster couples with freakin babies in carts - pushing them about.  And going to the new Mark Leckey VR thing this week.

Dreaming Reality by TXH

 A scripted, reflective, documentary about my ideas about dream symbolism & film making.

Please find below an excerpt from the script I am working on for this:

Darkness with a few spots of light breaking through, out of focus, camera slowly pushes in…

V/O I had that dream again last night.  In it I’m making a film.  It’s not like lucid dreaming where you can control whats going on.  (pause) I’m the viewer watching myself, until I become conscious that Its not real.  

Through the darkness camera pulls focus into C/U of head on pillow, turns and opens eyes.

Something causes anxiety in me and I snap out of it and then I’m back in bed

The truth wakes me up.

(Sound of typewriter)

V/O Recalling the dream, or  what I can remember (pause) 

Cut to room, day time, Wide shot into Medium shot.  Man sat typing at a desk shot from behind.

Man stands up, he is wearing 50’s style glasses ,and reads back looking towards camera.

‘Is that a good idea for a film?’

On screen graphic appears   REWIND <<

The scene spins back as V/O continues ‘In it I’m the hero’  spooling stops and the scene is now outside with a macho stereotype film star in a heroic pose. On screen graphic flashes up ‘HERO’

V/O except I’m an anti-hero

Cut to alley way at night time a Rick Deckard sort of character in trench coat, stubble maybe lights a cigarette looks beaten.

Cut to someone in a studio, CU of shuffling actor headshot, Cut to sign for Auditions for Hero, Anti-hero  this way (inc. previous two actors).This  will be the real audition taped..

V/O its been said that people used to dream in Black and white, when cinema was in black and white. (pause) Did we dream in 2D before 3D came about?

During V/O cut to 50’s looking guy wearing red/ blue 3D glasses. Then to someone wearing an oculus rift pair of glasses.

Cut back to screenwriter at typewriter and on screen graphic “THIS IS’NT ME’  as shot cuts back to audition space and the man is in front of a panel for ‘screenwriter part’.  Some one  says:

can we try it with the glasses on please

He puts on the glasses.  On screen graphic appears FAST FORWARD >>  

Back in the bedroom and the anti-hero gets out of the bed, still in trench coat and walks towards the door /exit.  He walks into the room where the screen writer is typing, they exchange a look and he places a gun on the side.  screenwriter walks out of the room to reveal WS he’s on a large film set /sound stage. He walks towards the camera

Film Criticism / How to write something that makes someone never speak to you again

Restricted Suns (22,22)   -  

(11,11) is a better number for people’s attention / film festivals and pacing / less is more!!

You’ve some great locations, costumes and use of colour (blue) going on, sound design - electricity sounds are nice.  I like some of the dialogue ‘after the purifying’  etc..  :)

My overall feeling about what you have shot is that it could cut tighter

Also i’m not sure if you have always used the best takes??

As mentioned the Titles are not very good; everything on screen / heard represents the film!!  If you cannot get a title designer / graphic designer just use a white typeface / typewriter on black background (as an example) - less is more!

So, going with this theme…  Dialogue - it’s mumbled and unintelligible in parts, particularly when he’s a cigarette in his mouth (07:30) , but even when not (14:50ish) - he doesn’t open his mouth when speaking!  Also the sound design is too high in the mix / or you need to ADR both their voices ? not a criticism just a technical fact..

I have a real problem with the guy in glasses / as far as his acting goes (17:05 is Bad) / use a another take or cut around it / him?  Cut the dialogue / Physically he moves Good on Screen..

The Bold Guy is a WAY better actor / character use more of him / if you have a choice / with out- takes / cut around Glasses Guy!

 - — Basically,  my feeling is that the audience need to identify or feel something for the leads in any film.   I detest this guy in glasses /   he gets better after losing the glasses, and says less!!  I can’t wait for him to die.  I don’t identify with the fascists either - so basically ‘do I care?’ well only that he dies soon ;)  Less is more - Steve mcQueen / Sean Connery hated saying lines and they did OK in their careers, by cutting most of the dialogue written - (its a film not a book) - he looks OK (I guess you think he’s cuddly?) His best bit is when physically climbing out of the bathtub near the end.

e.g. (09:01) ‘No you don’t, lets go’ is a pretty bad take - if you haven’t got a good one / cut out

I’m sure you’ve heard the expression kill your babies - when it comes to editing.  

To be fair,  the opening of the film should have your strongest OPENING..  I’d get rid of the whole opening scene - its a long slow take - with a tracking judder - or did I imagine that?  

Personally I’d start the film half way through (maybe you don’t like flash back / forward) but GRAB the audience and get them hooked with Intrigue / excitement - they want to see the outcome - THIS is a short film not a feature so you don’t have time for subtle symbolism - ooh, maybe we’ll come back to that later in the story and it’ll make sense? The audience don’t care.  At the beginning they want to be drawn in - long takes set the tone / mood -  but the time to tell the story including chase scene / exposition doesn’t really give you this …

Just for fun - Start the film at (11:45)  Its the darkness that makes things visible’   

great line - looks good / might be worth a watch!!  

at (14:37)  here’s your NEW title!!  The film begins :)   Why start a film at the beginning? - Tarantino 

Great - I’ll watch this for another 10 mins!!!! 

So,  the editing…  Its very conventionally cut (like an 80’s action movie) Fuck it up - jump through time - it’s a FILM / you have out-there ideas - why present them in a linear order?  It’s a mood / feeling you want to get across - the audience can play catch up whilst your film storms ahead.  It should be more experimental with the portrayal of narrative; in my opinion.

Personally I’d like to see a lot less time on each shot / we’ve all seen the Matrix (and Stalker) / take the beginning of scenes out /  e.g. running through the door way away from the search light.  lose first few seconds - Its a chase scene!!

Rather than the action happening within the scene / use the film process to convey the action too ?

I like how the sound in this scene / helicopter blades / feels like a heartbeat - but it should amplify and sonically burst open / rather than stay at the same tone.  Maybe a more industrial sounding / experimental soundtrack could be used - think Tetsuo - steal its sound track and see??

Check the sound design on THX1138  - I think a stronger identity for the world could be achieved / tied together with a ‘bed’ of sound representing the world, what lies underneath?

Here are some basic notes:

10:27 - I’d prefer not to see his gormless / childlike face as much as possible!

14:50 - cut out this dialogue he is mumbling / start scene at 15:19

17:05  - bad acting / cut around?

17:44 - love the bathroom scene

18:54 - Is it just me -or, what is going on? - its gone all symbolic / poetic / why isn’t everything like this?

Hope this doesn’t all sound negative - its not! - I’m trying to be constructive and a fresh pair of eyes

Pity, we didn’t sit down and go through it together.  Hope this doesn’t sound too Harsh.  I’d like to help you make the best of this film, It’s Good!!  BTW:  Its not your film anymore its its own entity and you have to nurture it into something that you / the audience will like..

I am definitely in the market for an implant as advised by Ali Raza on a previous appointment for a different space in my mouth (UL6).  But have found the process so far very tedious with a substantial amount of emails and no progress with my initial questions..

Re:   Multi-cam Live streaming: Tik Tok & influencers..

Originally I worked directly with Steven the Broadcast producer @ ‘Tik Tok’ who had already set up a small studio space in Manchester.  I Replicated the kit and set-up , style they were using at the London Studios I was running; which was an Atem switcher with 3 Sony A7’s. Inc:  onscreen graphics delivered by Tik Tok.. ,  Studio lighting with a technical operator to cut between cameras, add graphics and monitor sound levels. Utilising OBS software.

This was for a new venture, globally, for the parent company.  Taking popular Influencers with large followings and putting them in a ‘real-life’ studio setting to sell products in a QVC style show for streaming on Phones via their platform.

I gained a lot of insights in what worked for this new format and what did not.

Inc.  when to cut to the product or re-frame..   The difference between working with influencers and traditional TV presenters and how to keep their USP’s and fans happy.   This came about through monitoring the shows along with a statistician from L.A. who came specifically to see the early stages of progress.

I also produced for a well known London agency a similar show / promo (for the same platform) but utilising much higher production values that would be associated with traditional Live Television.  utilising the same portrait format and all the tricks that had been learned via the daily show which ran for 9 months in Studio 3.

Where to begin...

 Hi D,

Hope all is well..  

We’ve had a great summer, not sure if I previously mentioned..  

Me and M. went to Cornwall and the Eden Project as well as a quick jaunt to Hastings.  The heat has been amazing but that’s all coming to an end..   Like my last Job!

So,  in the meantime Ive been painting the flat, which I’m desperately trying to hang on to.  I’m hoping to sub-let the small office room on Air b&b; now that the pandemic seems to be a distant memory. Brixton is very trendy (again) and flat / house rentals are having the ‘Foxtons’ effect all around me.  I’ve dug my heels in this long so if I can get another year out of the flat then that’ll be great..  Today I’ve got an upgraded fibre broadband being installed too.

Since I’ve had some time on my hands and Mags has been in South Wales; doing up her mums new place which turned out to be a total wreck,  i’ve turned my attention back to my comics collection.

Not just reading them but buying individual bags and backing boards to keep them pristine.  Funnily enough its also stirred up thoughts and memories of the times when I bought them.  But I’ll leave the negative stuff for now!!

Ive actually got some questions that you might be able to help me with. That are indirectly associated with me trudging up my past, again….

- One of my friends has been studying Vedic Astrology in India and wanted to know the time that I was born, so that they can do a chart for me.  Unfortunately my birth certificate is only a basic one (I remember my mom saying that Harold wouldn’t fork out for a more detailed one) And has only the place and basic details on it.  Any chance you might know my time of birth ?

- I told someone I worked with that my mum went to a girls boarding school in Henley on Thames,  they told me (since they seemed to know) that there weren’t any such schools there.   It was always a mystery to me why she went away. However; she did tell me a story about breaking out at night and getting away with it, which someone later copied and got caught and suspended for.  Can you remember the name of the school, or is there a lot more to all this..?  She said that the daughters of service men had the opportunity to do this..   in my mind this all seems a tad unusual.. any memories / thoughts..  ??

This is a bit of a weird one..  I used to answer the house phone (sporadically) and people used to ask for the ‘Grand Wizard’; This is obviously a Freemason thing.    I was always told that it was a phonebook mix up, but he did disappear to his ‘work club’ on an evening once a  month!   I never saw any masonic paraphernalia in the house.  I had friends (when I was older) whose Dad’s were in the ‘Masons’ and they all knew about it.  Just another oddity of an unusual upbringing…. Do you know anything..?  (Might explain a few things)

I never knew about the Dutch house until I saw it when I got the train to yours…   

This just popped in to my mind…. Grandad said he was going to write his memoirs when I was staying with him in Billericay; after I had been working on the cruise ships.  Did he ever start..?  

I’ve yet to get the cine projector (that you gave me along with the super 8 films) working properly, as it needs some new (old) rubber parts.  It might be easier to pick up a new projector to be honest but I’ll see if I can find them…. :)

 I worked all the way through (on site) the Pandemic as a Key educational worker along with my NUS & Unison colleagues to implement safer working practices within our institutions. I became an advisor to the main H & S officers at LSBU. Helping to keep the facilities operating, writing and updating guidelines and working practices for the school of creative arts. As well as ordering PPE & implementing safer working conditions. Building works affected my new research role and the creation of a new digital-hub & moving-image research lab and I subsequently moved back into the commercial world; where I put all my acquired skills into everyday practice. Working consistently from one job to another and never getting ill. I took a short break after 12 months in my new role and caught the dreaded virus. The long term effects of this have now subsided and I am happy to be back volunteering with 'Reach' as a Producer / Production Manager and advising studios as a consultant. I am currently open to opportunities in my area of expertise
